Luna Park These outings are part of the Oasis Freeway initiative which takes kids on weekly adventures to give them fun experiences they have otherwise not been able to enjoy. Oasis workers like Cliff, Finn and Michelle also frequently take groups of young people to surf school, indoor rock climbing, go-karting, jewellery making and even 3 day camping trips with horseriding and abseiling. |
Paintball One outdoor activity guaranteed to draw a crowd is paintball. Like any kids, the Oasis clients delight in the idea of war games and shooting each other – thankfully in a safe, controlled environment. They also get the golden opportunity to shoot at Captain Paul Moulds! |
Christmas with the Salvos Carols by Candlelight is a major fundraising event for Paul and the Oasis annual budget. Paul, Robbin and their team spend weeks packing the candle bags with donated goods. They spend the evening selling every last bag in Hyde Park, Central Sydney, to ensure that the hard work can continue at Oasis. Paul and Robbin then throw a massive celebration lunch on Christmas Day for over 2000 needy people. There are food and presents galore - the Salvos make sure no-one goes without in the festive season. |
Workshops In 2006, a series of workshops were run on regular evenings at Oasis. A drama course, a poetry workshop, painting classes and a hip-hop jamming session were all activities to get the kids engaged with their own creativity. The music workshops were conducted with the support of Mission Australia's Creative Youth Initiative. |
Girls Club Every week at Oasis, girls head out on excursions for the day. These trips are designed for self-esteem and confidence building as well as female bonding. Activities include hair and beauty, pedicures and manicures, TAFE courses in make-up and styling, horseriding, and making jewellery. |
Freeway Camp Every few months, Oasis workers run an extended camping trip for kids. There are opportunities for abseiling, horse-riding and bushwalking. Nights under the stars, cooking over an open fire and storytelling make the experience something very different. The kids really enjoy a break from the concrete jungle and the perils of the city. |
